Semantics is the study of meanings in a language. When learning a language we will come across words will already have agreed-upon meaning and we cannot change them. The form of a word does not contribute to its meaning. However, there are exceptions such as onomatopoetic words that have a close relationship between the form and its meaning because they are sound symbolic words.

There are many different kinds of meanings. Denotation refers to the meaning of words that we find in a dictionary, a meaning that is constantly associated with that word. In contrast, connotation is the meaning of a word that will vary (unlike denotative meanings) from individual to individual, community to community and this makes it extremely difficult to identify the meaning between vocabulary words.
